Charles Likes to Tell Stories

In this installment of the ValueTales series, Spencer Johnson helps us appreciate the imagination of Charles Dickens (1812-1870).

The book introduces Charles, a boy who loves to listen to his father tell stories. He decides that when he grows up he will be a great storyteller. Charles reads books to see how other people tell stories. He is encouraged by his imaginary friend, a talking bookworm. Charles had to work hard to help his family pay their debts. He remembered all of the hardship he saw, and when he was an adult he wrote stories about it. His stories entertained a lot of people--and convinced some of them to help people who didn't have enough money.

Like other books in the ValueTales series, this book uses a real-life person to exemplify an important value. It is suitable for reading by children in the later elementary school grades. A "Historical Facts" section at the book's end summarizes Dickens' life in a single-page bio form suitable for adults.

Closing quote: "Perhaps you may want to think about how you feel when you use your imagination. What you choose to do with your imagination may be very different from what Charles Dickens did with his. But whatever you decide to do with your imagination, let's hope it makes you happier. Just like it did for our good friend Charles Dickens." (p. 61-62)

Reminder of the little details

Instead of having to go back through and read everything you’ve read on the subject, you can just get this study guide to review everything you need to know for the test. The guide has the details you need to remember and doesn’t leave anything out. Using this guide is much easier because everything you need it in one place. Great Investment.

This is the 5th firefighter book I have purchased to get me ready for my journey. I can honestly say from a candidates point of view, this is the most helpful book you probably will be able to find. Most books either are chapter books with no ending or they are not diverse enough. This book is put together very well and you will be on page 100 before you know it but at the same time you are actively engaged with the book. It is step by step and will break everything down for you. Especially if you are planning on applying for the upcoming Chicago fire department exam...Must Have ! Wish you guys the best !

Thought Provoking Insight into Islam

Abdullah ibn Abi Sarh's Biography of the Prophet Muhammad - Illustrated is an aesthetically appealing and easy to comprehend biography that unearths the real history of the legendary Prophet Muhammad. While there are many scriptures of Islam (e.g., Qur'an, Hadith, Siras, etc.); examining them either requires extensive amounts of time, or they are often too complex and sometimes prone to misconceptions. Abi Sarh addresses these issues in order to make the history of Islam easier to understand for Muslim youth, educators, and anyone interested in learning more about the lore of the Prophet Muhammad.

While this text touches on extremely sensitive global and national topics of terrorism, Biography of the Prophet Muhammad - Illustrated is thoroughly educational. Following the September 11th attacks, there has been a constant dichotomy facing Islam and its followers. For example, some Muslims state that Islam is a peaceful religion, yet there continues to be bloodshed in the name of Islam and jihad.

At the same time, the text has a format similar to a comic book, which is less intimidating for readers. While there is nothing comic about the topic of Islam, terror, and mainly the Prophet Muhammad, it is more probable that younger generations will be more inclined to read something formatted thusly, rather than dense, time-consuming scriptures that can seem rather daunting and difficult to understand.

This account of the life of the Prophet Muhammad begins with the death of his father, Abdullah--while Muhammad is still in the womb. Overcome with depression, his mother Amina gives Muhammad to Halimah, who nursed him for the first five years of his life, before returning him to his mother out of fear that his constant seizures were a sign of demonic possession.

Throughout the illustrations, the author weaves scripture from the Koran. When the Bajilis steal Muhammad's camels, he refers to the Qur'an 5.33: "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land; that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter."

Overall, Abdullah ibn Abi Sarh's Biography of the Prophet Muhammad - Illustrated is a thought-provoking book, and an ideal introduction to further studies or research into Islam and the Muslim culture. Simply formatted, this is a must read for all, particularly for Muslims, educators, historians, and anyone interested in learning about the legendary figures of Islam, Prophet Muhammad.

Book worth buying not least because it's the first illustrated life of Muhammad

The virtues of this book are many, but its historic feat is to be the first illustrated life of Muhammad. And luckily for us it comes in English. Other languages must suffice with the electronic version for now.

One can tell a good amount of research went into this book. While it is very informative, the story line and pictures transition smoothly and logically, making it an easy read.

Some might say it has a comic book format, for lack of better terminology, but graphic novels are becoming more common, and this would be a graphic history with footnotes, a format quite suited to informing the reader of early Islam's graphic violence. With so much misinformation out there, and with Muslims and Islam no longer just on the other side of the wide ocean, this book comes at a good time to help set the record straight about Islam.

One Amazon commentator gave the book only four stars, but would have given it five stars if the background weren't so dark in places. The online electronic version of the book shows the original is lighter colored and brighter, and the next printing will no doubt address that technical printing glitch. Anyway, considering how inexpensively priced the book is, and how much thought and talent it took to prepare, it deserves nothing less than five stars, and it deserves to be in your hands, and in your library now.

Excellent chronology, poor picture

This book is a very excellent one, portraying Mohammed, the founder of Islam. No political correctness in this book. If you want to know Islam quickly yet still quite accurately, read this book. Had it not been for a too dark background in the pictures, I will give this book a 5-star.

After an account of the collapse of the old regime in 1974, the book studies the complex revolutionary period that followed, and the struggle in Europe and Africa to define the future role of Europe's then poorest country. These events also had international repercussions which transformed the balance of forces in southern Africa, following the collapse of Europe's last overseas empire. The consequent actions and reactions of the European powers and the United States are examined, and telling comparisons are also drawn with later developments in Eastern Europe and with the wider collapse of the communist movement.

Fluent, scholarly -- but who is the audience?

I was living in Portugal during most of the events that Mr. Maxwell describes in this book, and therefore began reading it with great interest. I was gratified with the level of scholarship that Mr. Maxwell brought to this topic, sadly neglected outside of Portugal. Mr. Maxwell writes with the familiarity of someone with firsthand experience of this period of Portuguese contemporary political history. This familiarity may be at the root both of the book's considerable strengths as well as its weakness. At its strongest, Mr. Maxwell's writing is a fluent, succinct exposition of the first few years following the Portuguese revolution of April 25, 1974 (and the political and historical context leading up to it). He gets it right, focusing on all the key characters and events, with an intimate understanding of the socio-political dynamics surrounding these events. His research is sound and fairly comprehensive. And he chooses to organize his analysis around the failure of the Portuguese left, particularly the Communist party, to appropriate the post-revolutionary period and stand up to the rise of a moderate Socialist Party. This is exactly the focus to take in order to link post-colonial Portugal to the European Union that it embraced.

But perhaps because he is intimately familiar with his topic, Mr. Maxwell tends to leave his audience behind. On occasion he will drop a name or mention an event that may have significant evocative power for someone familiar with that place and time but that, without more, is lost on others. Brevity is a virtue, but not at the expense of one's audience. An empathetic writer will be sensitive to when his audience may need a digression to set the scene or explain the context. I was fortunate to have the background to grasp the significance of names and events and to fill in the occasional gap. But for the same reason, Mr. Maxwell didn't tell me much I didn't already know. Which begs the question, who is the audience? Anyone with the level of familiarity necessary to fully appreciate this topic will probably find the book shallow. At the same time, a reader unfamiliar with this topic will likely keep getting lost -- a danger aggravated by a not-so-linear narrative. At the very least, without guidance from the author, that same reader may inadvertenly gloss over some of the most interesting and evocative parts of Mr. Maxwell's book.

Absolutely worth reading

OK, so I'm one of those people who's had his life changed by Karen Horney's "Our Inner Conflicts" and "Neurosis and Human Growth". I had read both of those books several times and taken something new out of them each time. Since then I had moved on to other authors in my quest to understand myself (namely Carl Jung and Alice Miller). I figured that since I found NAHG much better overall than OIC, Horney had progressively gotten better and her earlier stuff wouldn't be worth reading.

Well, I was wrong. I had some time and decided what the hey, I'd read this book. This was her first shot at writing a book. And it's amazing. Her genius is quite apparent even in this early book. There were quite a few moments where I just had to grin and say to myself "I've missed you." This is Karen Horney, authentic as ever. There were a lot of connections that I made concerning some of the finer details of my neurosis, that I never made until reading this book.

She spends much of the book making a connection between anxiety and hostility, a connection that she did not make so explicit in her later books but which is very eye-opening. The chapter on guilt feelings was possibly my favorite; they are elaborated in a way I'd never seen before. Her brief discussion of perfectionism, amounting to a couple paragraphs, made me think that maybe that was the original core of my neurosis, as I was able to trace stuff she talked about to far earlier periods in my life than I ever had reading her other books

No, it's not her best book. And if somebody insisted they were only going to read one Horney book, absolutely I would recommend Neurosis and Human Growth. And if it were two, I'd add Our Inner Conflicts.

Bone Up on Your Grammar

I bought this after reading Stephen King's book on writing, in which he said this is the book he used in public school. I'm glad it's in my library. Its useful, well indexed and handy to have if you have any questions about grammar, spelling, syntax, etc.

50 years old and still invaluable

I am still using my copy (1951/1957 edition), and I have long recommend it to other teachers who want something to beef up their courseware. Exercises are straighforward and progressive and right in the book itself. The series are progressive, year to next year. The red and black text in my edition was unusual in ca. 1950-60, but the contrasting colors have always helped point me quickly to what I'm looking for. In my experience, unsurpassed were the index and treatment of diagramming. Having worked through the book in a senior composition and grammar class taught by a Latin teacher, I was fully equipped for the next step--composition classes at the University of Michigan, and graduate courses in Greek, Hebrew, French, German, and others later.

The Best English Grammar and Composition Book Ever

This is the only english grammar and composition book you'll ever need. Every student should have this in their library as the "go to book", because some of the newer books being used today do not cover the rules of grammar and composition well or they re-invent the standards and rules altogether. I have seen this book on the shelves of many educators(both high school and college)as well, so that definitely speaks to the quality of this book. I was pleased that this older book was available for purchase. I bought one for each of my children to use in high school and to take with them to college and beyond...I highly recommend this book!

Brilliant and fun!

I simply adore the comic-book format! Never has a grammar book been so easy and fun to read. It is through, comprehensive enough for a beginner/intermediate and perfectly organized. The charts, tables and even the story are compelling. I just wish they had it for more language. Good job!

Worst language book I have ever used. Contains suggestions on how to use incorrect grammar as "shortcuts," examples that use verb tenses not taught yet, and endless esoteric vocabulary (who needs to learn how to say, "how can I make an announcement on the airport loudspeaker?"?? because this is included here) fill the pages. CD is nothing but a VERY fast-paced recitation of words on the pages, not additional conversations or exercises. I took a class as a French beginner that used this book and now feel that my experience was largely a waste of time.

Very disappointing
By language lover
I read this book to see if it would work for teaching French at my local senior center. Unfortunately, with its loose organization, lack of clarity, errors, typos and tiny print, it does not pass muster.
I gave it a couple of stars because it has charm and some neat colloquial expressions.
