THERE were three distinct stages in the evolution of Annette Brougham's attitude towards the knocking in the room above. In the beginning it had been merely a vague discomfort. Absorbed in the composition of her waltz, she had heard it almost subconsciously. The second stage set in when it became a physical pain like red-hot pincers wrenching her mind from her music. Finally, with a thrill in indignation, she knew it for what it was—an insult. The unseen brute disliked her playing, and was intimating his views with a boot-heel. Defiantly, with her foot on the loud pedal, she struck—almost slapped—the keys once more.

These short, very slight stories from early in Wodehouse's (A Gentleman of Leisure, Audio Reviews, LJ 1/95) career amount to apprentice work, really. Many of the tales deal with sweet, unusual varieties of courtship and show the flair for comic understatement that served the author so well later on in his prolific career. Characters, though, are underdeveloped, and the stories are too short to allow the sort of comically complex situations that the mature Wodehouse was able to exploit so well. A great deal of Wodehouse is available on tape, and unless a library is looking for completeness, this is an easy title to skip.?John Hiett, Iowa City P.L.

Review
Timelessly funny. . . [Davidson] is wry, British and almost drawling, and one supposes that this is pretty much how Wodehouse himself would sound. --AudioFile

Excellent addition to your Wodehouse collection
By Rayna Nielsen
The Man Upstairs & Other Stories is a collection of short stories centered on love in all it's Wodehouse glory. Full of the trademark wit that can only be found in a Wodehouse story. I didn't have any of the laugh out loud moments I did when reading the Jeeves books though that fact didn't detract from each story's lighthearted look at life's most serious love issues.
I enjoyed diving deeper into the Wodehouse repertoire through this collection of short stories.

Tickle Your Funny Bone!
By Mary Ingram
I love P. G. Wodehouse stories. With life so hectic today it is such a pleasure
to sit down and get lost in these amusing tales. "The Man who Disliked Cats is
hilarious. The main character is a Frenchman in a bar in SOHO. This is his
description: He had the appearance of one who has searched for the leak in life's
gas pipe with a lighted candle. This Frenchman was working for his uncle in the
hotel he owned. He did not like this life and was only hanging on until he could
make some good money. And he does not like cats. He sees one of the residents,
an obnoxious, heavy set rich woman with this big beast of a cat. The cat jumps
on his desk tossing everything off and he takes a swing at it and uncle
fires him (he will continue to help him as after all he is the son of the
uncle's sister and after all, blood is blood). He meets a beautiful girl as he
is leaving the hotel and makes her and her father's acquaintance. They seem to
be vey wealthy and take a liking to him asking him to visit their estate in
London so he goes to uncle to hit him for a loan-this might pay off and he
can pay back uncle for all he owes him so he goes to the estate and while
there a friend of the beautiful girl brings her a present; a cat and yes, it is
THE cat he had swung around. He knows he has to get rid of this cat if he
doesnt want her to find out how he swung her precious around at the hotel
then he manages to get himself in deeper water.
I love Wodehouse's Jeeves novels but I am really enjoying reading his many
other tales.
