A broad view of a topical architectural issue

Regionalism has occupied the architectural discourse under different guises, picturesque, vernacular, popular and organic architecture, at least since the early 19th century. In the 1980 Kenneth Frampton revived the interest in regionalism by defining with "Critical Regionalism" a contemporary typological and tectonic approach.
It is clear from this anthology that regionalism still eludes a precise definition, which is in a way a healthy aspect of an approach that should be primarily local even when embracing some universal values.
The broad inclusiveness of the texts, spanning from 1929 lectures by Le Corbusier to the last decade (up to 2005) makes this work very valuable not just as a history of ideas, but also as away to realize the deep roots that link modern architecture to the local ways of building. Today we can interpret Regionalism as Sam Mockbee's Rural Studio work or as the Regenerative Architecture proposed by Steven Moore (both included in the anthology), with its obvious connections to the idea of social and ecological sustainability.
I have found the texts to be very stimulating for my architecture students, and not too hard to read. Seminal theorists, such as Christopher Alexander and Juhani Pallasmaa, are included. The author's introductions are informative and explanatory without being unduly long. It is a good choice of essays, some hard to find in print, that makes a good reading also outside the classroom.

The intent of this volume was to construct a coherent history of the idea of regionalism from its many many supporting texts and ideas. It is an important collection of writing that covers the entire 20th Century intellectual history of Regionalism in Architecture and includes such authors as: Lewis Mumford, Le Corbusier, David Williams, Mary Colter, Pietro Belluschi, Christopher Alexander, Wendell Berry, Kenneth Frampton, Sigfried Giedion, Harwell Hamilton Harris, Richard Ingersoll, Benton MacKaye, John Gaw Meem, Richard Neutra, Paul Ricouer, Alan Colquhoun, Juhani Pallasmaa, among others (44 in all). Further, it considers Regionalism in an international context, particularly the developing world through the writings of Suha Ozkan (Middle East), Balkrishna Doshi (India), and Kenza Boussora (Algeria). In it are provided contextual introductions to each text and an introduction that attempts to place the discourse, as a whole in reasonable framework. The topics include: Regionalist theory, Referential Regionalism (1920s & 30s), Regional Modernism (1930s-1960s), Regional Planning, Bioregionalism, Critical Regionalism, and a set of essays that update and extend the discourse into the future via performativity theory, sustainability, and the socially-critical work of the Rural Studio.

Great seller - the book was in better condition than expected.

I love the book also; great for undergraduate architecture students. It is basically a series of essays, lectures. I think of it as a collection of short stories that address the title.

About the Author
Patrick Hurley was born in Spokane, Washington in 1942. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics (with a Physics minor) from Gonzaga University in 1964 and his Ph.D. in philosophy of science with an emphasis in history of philosophy from Saint Louis University in 1973. In 1972 he began teaching at the University of San Diego, where his courses have included logic, philosophy of science, metaphysics, process philosophy, and legal ethics. In 1987 he received his J.D. from the University of San Diego and he is currently a member of the California Bar Association. He retired from teaching in 2008, but continues his research and writing. His interests include music, art, opera, environmental issues, fishing, and skiing.

So-so

I bought it because I couldn't afford to spend $100 on the book, and it's been a wash. As a cost efficient replacement for the book, this CD can't be beat. For learning purposes, it's been okay.

It's more concise than the book (at least what I could tell from comparing the first chapter on each), which I believe has helped me to understand the subject matter a bit better (at least compared to my classmates so far). However, it doesn't cover everything from the book. There are several instances where the CD just directs you to the book to understand an issue. (This hasn't had much of an impact for me, however.) The number of problems is very helpful, because it gives you a chance to explore something you might not get.

The absolute worst aspect of this CD is the design of it. To start with, it's just ugly. The layout is confusing, with two different places where information can show up and no specific pattern as to what will appear in which place or why. Navigation is very simplistic, and it's very difficult to go back to reference a piece of information without having to wade through whole sections and all the problems. I ended up just taking notes as I went through the CD and using that for reference after the first week of class. There's also a very random and unexpected use of childish graphics that don't serve any purpose.

My instructor went over the CD in class and I had bought a book w/out the CD and realized, after class, I really needed the CD. The book does have some things not on the CD but most of the book is quite hard to really comprehend. I got a bootleg copy of the CD then bought a Mac and could no longer use that CD. I thought they didn't make this for Mac! Thank you so much for posting pictures of the case showing system requirements. After being on the CD an hour or so, you get the hang of the layout and what not. After you understand it, it will be your most helpful tool if your not such a PHIL wiz.

Software Feels a Bit Old, But Effective

I am using this software to accompany the textbook for a class. The software (running on a Mac with OS X 10.6) seems a bit old in the interface and outdated compared to newer programs you might be used to. But, it is a very effective product. The book to go with this CD is not the easiest textbook to understand. The CD provides all of the facts, as well as practice problems with instant feedback on your answers. I would recommend the CD if you are taking a class using the text by the same authors.

reference reading material

This manual is a must for contractors who design and install residential HVAC systems. I worked with a duct design firm when I built my house and referred to this manual. Unfortunately, most contractors don't use software (or even long hand calculations) to design duct systems...they estimate based upon past installations and by using square footage measurements only. While this is faster, it usually means your HVAC system is oversized or undersized and will not provide the expected comfort under a wide variety of conditions. Extra time spent in properly designing your HVAC system will reward the occupants with a more confortable living / working space.

Hank - Bless Him - wrote the books on ACCA cooling calculations, duct design, etc. Amazon sells this book for a good bit less than ACCA.

Buy it and learn the "Standard of Care" for flexible duct, fitting equivalent lengths ("EL") and the multipliers to be applied for flexible duct workmanship; there're also graphs for flexible duct and lined or fibrous glass friction (NO - You can't use a metal duct Ductulator to size those!).

Finally - practical rules for a functional and wardrobe! This book would be a great present for a teenager starting out, or anyone ready to refresh her wardrobe. If only I'd found it years ago; I would have saved thousands of dollars in shops and hundreds of hours of confusion in front of my wardrobe.
This book includes a shopping list for basics pieces and advice on how they should work together, how to build "capsules" of clothing, which well-known stores to visit for different items and even which clothes NEVER to take on holiday. A gem.

Great fashion advice and tips!

I absolutely loved this book! Sally Bradfield is a genius with masterful fashion advice and tips. She obviously must be a natural when it comes to fashion sense to be able to write such a great book. She really does a great job of explaining the nuances that go into a great look. She presents her advice and tips in a formula-like way that anyone can understand. I have already seen a great improvement in my ability to put together outfits in my daily routine. I know it is working because I have been getting compliments like crazy on the things that I've been wearing at work and out with friends. If you're looking for a book to help you become more stylish and understand fashion then I highly recommend you check out this great book and resource. 5 big stars.

I wish I could have had this book years ago it would have saved me so much time, money and aggravation! I love this wonderfully written little gem. I have already started my purge and I cannot believe all the junk I have kept in my wardrobe for sooo long, it is so freeing to let that stuff go. Thank you so much Sally for writing this easily understood and extremely helpful book. Your tips were all fantastic and I will now be looking at every item I purchase so differently than I have in the past…DO I REALLY NEED IT, WHAT DO I HAVE THAT WILL GO WITH IT AND WHAT AM I WILLING TO PURGE TO HAVE IT??? I highly recommend this fantastic book to all women out there young and old, there’s some knowledge for everyone in it.
