The Hun: Scourge of God AD 375-565 (Warrior), by Nic Fields

The Huns were the most feared and notorious barbarians of the ancient world. The infamous Attila, king of the Huns, and his subjects were known to their Roman enemies as the 'scourge of god'. They were Turco-Mongol nomads, originating from the steppes of central Asia who migrated westward, shifting whole nations and leaving devastation in their wake.

The Huns were superb horsemen and excellent archers, fighting with a reflex composite-bow, which could penetrate armour at 100 yards, a more potent weapon than the longbow or any bow in use at the time. In battle they would strike fear into the hearts of their opponents and break up their formations, charging at them with surprising speed and apparent chaos whilst showering them with arrows. Thus their very name came to epitomise swift, merciless destruction.

Often the Huns are dismissed as barbarians, and thus historically they became a metaphor for barbarism. However they were well able to enjoy the trappings of civilised society won through their military gains. They also had a tremendous impact on the Roman military system, as 80 years after the Hun defeat at the battle of Chalons, the Roman cavalryman was armed with the composite bow and as skilled as the Hun in hand-to-hand fighting.

Nic Fields expertly surveys the rise of the Huns and the workings of their society and the development of their battle-winning weapons and tactics, from their first attacks on the Goths to the death of the Emperor Justinian, paying particular attention to the great battle of Chalons (June 20, 451) and the mighty rule of Attila.

A Disappointment
By zahak
Osprey's "The Huns" was quite a disappointment. The biggest flaw was that author Nic Fields failed to integrate any of the recent scholarship on the subject for this book. There has been a flood of archeological and physical anthropological research from Eastern European scholars regarding the Huns and the Pannonian/Hungarian plain in the last 30 years. Much has been translated into English and is available at most decent research libraries. Fields, also, fails to incorporate more recent Western scholarly materials, such as the works of Denis Sinor or Peter Golden. Based mostly on classical sources, Fields's work reads as if written by a 1920's British armchair historian. This was a huge lost opportunity for Osprey as a follow up to David Nicolle's tremendous if overly ambitious (tracing a thousand years of steppe cultures), Attila and the Nomad Hordes.

Another disappointment was the illustrations. Fields lards the book with illustrations and photos from the Renaissance, the European Romantic period, a Verdi opera, and from the cinema (including a photo of Anthony Quinn playing Attila.) While these may be interesting in a contemporary cultural context, they add absolutely nothing to a portrayal of the Hunnic culture. Fields, also, includes the ubiquitous photos of Greek artisan representations of Scythians on golden bowls, which pre-date Attila by about 700 years and armor from the Chinese Qianlong Emperor c. 1750 C.E., i.e. 1400 years after the Hun era! They are so askew chronologically that it's hard not to look at these inclusions as less than energetic scholarship. If he had emphasized more recent source material he would have found far more engaging images. There are some chronologically appropriate photos included: a skull displaying "Hunnic" cranial deformation, an Alemanni spangenhelm from the period, and Hunnic/Gothic jewelry. These are germane and powerful photographs. It is unfortunate that there aren't more photos as relevant as this in the book.

The final straw is the color plates, usually the high point of Osprey books. Christa Hook's illustrations are poorly drawn and ugly. She has done fine work for Osprey in the past. Her work on "Saracen Faris," "Knights of Outremer," "Norman Knight," "Late Roman Cavalry"," and other works are more than competent. But here, the work appears rushed. Her representations of Hun warriors are rough and grotesque. Moreover, there are only 6 color plates in the book. The other Osprey Warrior series books that I've seen have at least 10-12 color plates.

This work appears that it was done on the quick and cheap.

A great disappointment
By Maciej
Contrary to most of the Osprey books (I have more than three hundred them now, after 20 years of collecting) this is a poor quality thing. The text is at the very best average, the color plates are just HORRIBLE!! Don't buy it.

The Charley Chase Talkies: 1929-1940, by James L. Neibaur

Charley Chase began his film career in early 1913 working as a comedian, writer, and director at the Al Christie studios under his real name, Charles Parrott. Chase then joined Mack Sennett's Keystone studio in 1914, costarring in early films of Charlie Chaplin and Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, as well as directing the frenetic Keystone Cops. By 1924 he was starring in a series of one-reel comedies at Hal Roach studios, graduating to two-reel films the following year. In 1929, he made the transition to sound films. Along with the continuing popularity of his own short comedies, Chase often directed the films of others, including several popular Three Stooges efforts.

In The Charley Chase Talkies: 1929-1940, James L. Neibaur examines, film-by-film, the comedian's seventy-nine short subjects at Roach and Columbia studios. The first book to examine any portion of Chase’s filmography, this volume discusses the various methods Chase employed in his earliest sound films, his variations on common themes, his use of music, and the modification of his character as he reached the age of forty. Neibaur also acknowledges the handful of feature film appearances Chase made during this period.

A filmmaker whom Time magazine once declared was receiving the most fan mail of any comedian in movies, Charley Chase remains quite popular among classic film buffs, as well as historians and scholars. A detailed look into the work of an artist whose career straddled the silent and sound eras, The Charley Chase Talkies will be appreciated by those interested in film comedy of the 1920s and 30s.

Review
The bulk of The Charley Chase Talkies is made up of a film by film examination of the sound shorts produced by Chase. Each movie is given its due, with an informative who-what-when section and a thoughtful examination of how each fits into Chase’s overall body of work. Tracking both the evolution of his direction and the growth of his talents as an actor, this overview is as rewarding as it is informative. Particularly interesting were the examinations of the difference between the films that Chase both directed and starred in, as opposed to those where he acted under the direction of another.

For fans of Chase, The Charley Chase Talkies will expand and illuminate your understanding of his remarkable talents. (Pretty Clever Films)

Neibaur’s knowledge and passion for the subject shines through in his writing, making this more than your average film-by-film study. Consistently interesting and entertaining, the book is filled with enough knowledge to satisfy any film buff. The best part is that this segment of Chase’s career hasn’t been so thoroughly studied until now, so the information and Neibaur’s analyses are fresh and original. The choice to concentrate only on Chase’s talkies was a good one as well, allowing much more room for a more in-depth study in what still ended up being over a 300 page book. . . . Neibaur’s [has written an] impressively thorough book. This is required reading for any fan of Charley Chase, comedy, or just film in general. (Examiner)

About the Author

New Book on The Charley Chase Talkies is Terrific!
By Brian Anthony
Fifteen years ago I co-authored, with Andy Edmonds, a biography of the film comedian Charley Chase,"Smile When the Raindrops Fall." A film-by-film assessment of Chase's work was long overdue, but James Neibaur's excellent "The Charley Chase Talkies 1929 - 1940" has proven well worth the wait. The book is an extraordinarily well-written combination of research and critical commentary. I especially enjoyed Neibaur's insights into the social context of Chase's films, such as the chapter on "Whispering Whoopee" (1930) which examines the effect of the depression on the upper-social classes. An important addition to film history and simply, a fascinating read. Most highly recommended!

Absolute must-buy!
By Lord Heath
To study the career of an almost-obscure subject is hard enough to do, but when you consider the lack of availability of Charley Chase films on DVD and on the home market, it makes the job almost impossible. Yet author Neibaur has pulled off an exhausting research of the sound films of one of cinema's most under-rated comedians and has done so in style!

To put things into perspective, this book does for its subject what Randy Skretvedt's "The Magic Behind The Movies" book does for Laurel & Hardy. With 80 films reviewed and discussed at length throughout the book's bulky 365 pages, this is the new contender for one of the best books ever written on any subject connected with the Hal Roach Studios.

The book does not waste time or pages that would otherwise bore the reader with long prefaces, credits or text that you would usually skip. We begin with a chapter on Chase's silent films (and there were many of them!), which runs for seven pages - and then it's down to the nitty gritty of the book.

Lobby cards and stills break up the text and can be found scattered throughout the passages of the book. An index which spans 5 pages, and an appendix which features a section that deals with the films written, produced or directed by Chase himself.

Generous credit is offered to authors Brian Anthony and Andy Edmonds for work they previously published on Charley Chase; but much of this book is the original work of the author Neibaur, who writes with both enthusiasm and passion for his subject. If you can look beyond the stiff price tag it carries, then I can assure you it will be money well spent.

One things is for certain, fans of Charley Chase reading it will find themselves hunting down collectors to get their hands on the films!

I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone interested in Charley Chase, Laurel and Hardy or production at the Hal Roach Studios during the 1930s.

A book worthy of its subject
By willsumner
Charley Chase deserves to be ranked with Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Harry Langdon and Laurel & Hardy as one of the greatest movie comedians of all time. THE CHARLEY CHASE TALKIES 1929-1940 serves as a fine reminder of and introduction to Chase’s brilliant talent.
TALKIES is a lively and informative film-by-film examination of the eighty comedy shorts Chase made after Hollywood’s transition to sound films. Each title is covered from a historical perspective as well as from an entertainment aspect. It’s a nice balance. Even if you don’t concur with the assessments, the author does an astute job of conveying why he likes or is disappointed by particular entries, which is greatly appreciated by this reader.
The only drawback, which is no fault of the book, is that many of these Chase comedies still remain officially unavailable on DVD. Here’s wishing that this situation is rectified soon.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–A comprehensive, well-documented encyclopedia devoted to Jane Austen's world as seen through her literature. More than 150 alphabetical entries range in length from a paragraph to many pages, include references to Austen's works, and describe the topics' historical and cultural significance, often in great detail. Some of the longer articles are divided into subtopics; for example, Clothing offers information on both men's and women's clothing, Outer Garments, Accessories, Fabrics, and Buying and Making Clothes. In addition, there are separate entries on Sewing, Shoes, Gloves, Hats, and Pocketbooks and Reticules. While a number of the articles deal with politics and government, for the most part, they present a view of culture and society as reflected in Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, and other, minor works. The article on Places contains maps, lists, notes, and tables of locations mentioned in Austen's books. Street maps of London and Bath are included under those entries. Throughout the set, page references to specific titles are indicated in parentheses. Most of the black-and-white illustrations are reproductions of period cartoon drawings. An extensive time line and thematic bibliography complete this work. A valuable resource for students and teachers of Austen's works as well as a cultural study of 18th-century England.–Pat Bender, The Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, PA

From Booklist
Noted for their wit and insight, Jane Austen's novels depict the social and domestic lives of the English country gentry during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The world inhabited by her characters was, in many respects, also Austen's world, and this shared milieu is the focus of Olsen's compilation, which is similar in concept and format to her All Things Shakespeare (Greenwood, 2002).

The 153 alphabetically arranged articles cover a broad range of subjects, among them carriages and other modes of transportation, clothing and accessories, entertainment, food and drink, household matters, intellectual concerns, and military life. Although some articles, for example Brickbatand Under-hung, are as brief as a few sentences, the majority are considerably longer, ranging up to 38 pages for Navy. Most entries include references to instances of the topic or term in Austen's writings or her life. Surprisingly, there is no article on women, so information on their status, property rights, etc., must be gleaned from other entries, such as Marriage and Widow.

The black-and-white illustrations include line drawings and maps but are primarily reproductions of contemporary prints, which, unfortunately, often lack clarity. Captions provide identification numbers through which these images can be retrieved in high resolution and in color on a Web site at Yale University's Lewis Walpole Library. Although this unique feature will be valuable to scholars and filmmakers, most users probably will not take that extra step. Both volumes contain an alphabetical list of entries, a topical guide to article titles, and a key to abbreviations. In addition, volume 2 includes an extensive time line that correlates milestones in the Austen family with significant contemporary events, an impressive bibliography organized by broad categories, and an index. The index does not always provide adequate access. For example, it contains no entry for boarding schools, which are discussed on pages 230-32, or for colds, treated on pages 441-42.

Drawn from contemporary and modern studies, this well-written and meticulously researched work provides a convenient means for general readers, students, and scholars to gain a better understanding of the social, cultural, and political climate of Austen's time. Offering broader coverage of the period than J. David Grey's The Jane Austen Companion(Macmillan, 1986), it complements Paul Poplawski's A Jane Austen Encyclopedia (Greenwood, 1998), which focuses on characters, writings, and family members. Particularly suitable for academic and larger public libraries, it will be a useful addition in any setting where Austen's writings are read or studied. Marie Ellis

Review
"Intended to make Austen's works more understandable to contemporary readers, this publication covers the customs, manners, and landscape of her age….Arranged alphabetically, the encyclopedia has more than 150 entries, ranging in length from a few sentences (angels) to more than 30 pages (food, navy), and containing references to relevant passages from Austen's works. In addition to a bibliography of sources that includes Web sites, this work provides an alphabetical list of articles, a list of articles by topic, a time line for Austen family activities and achievements, and a corresponding one for events in the political/military, religious/cultural, medical, technological, and scientific spheres….For those serving serious Austen scholars, it will be a valuable acquisition. Highly recommended. Graduate students and researchers/faculty." - Choice

"Though it is often said that Jane Austen's novels are character-driven, primarily concerned with the fictive people she created and set in motion, independent scholar Olsen ( All Things Shakespeare) believes that Austen readers miss a lot without a fuller understanding of the culture and context in which these characters operate. This handsome and easily usable two-volume work can help readers gain that understanding. Olsen compiles extensive scholarship on the topic into more than 150 well-designed and well-written A-to-Z articles on such topics as clothing, education, politics, religion, science, business, society, and the military of 18th- and 19th-century England. Among the features that make this encyclopedia so useful are hundreds of references to passages from Austen's work, inserted parenthetically into the text of the articles, where they illuminate the topic at hand….Convenient for students and anyone else interested in exploring a particular topic, this reference would be a useful addition to pubic, school, and academic libraries serving general through undergraduate readers. Highly recommended." - Library Journal

"[A] delight - plentifully illustrated … and full of fascinating information … very difficult to stop reading once you have picked it up…" - English

"[A] valuable aid, or even primer, for anyone wishing to get more out of their reading … Olsen's writing is clear and clever. She pulls interesting and amusing anecdotes out of her source literature to illustrate points… A useful and fascinating work overall and a valuable part of any public, school, or academic collection." - Reference Reviews

"These must be two of the most useful and informative reference volumes that any library could add to its collection of Jane Austen's works… a labour of love, that is meticulously done and in very readable style." - Sensibilities

"Aimed at students and general readers, this two-volume encyclopedia provides background information on the world of Jane Austen. More than 150 alphabetically arranged entries describe various domestic items, the social scene, the workplace, religion, and everyday customs in 19th-century England. Many entries feature B&W illustrations from the Lewis Walpole Library. Special notations guide readers to passages in Austen's writings that pertain to the subject matter. Sample topics include the gentry, army recruitment, shoes, calling cards, the Napoleonic Wars, marriage, the clergy, and bathing." - Reference & Research Book News

"[S]cholars and aficionados of Jane Austen will welcome Greenwood's All Things Austen: an Encyclopedia of Austen's World. In more than 150 articles author Kirstin Olsen describes the world of Jane Austen….It successfully reflects the world in which Jane Austen lived and which she so vividly portrayed. All Things Austen will stand alongside another Greenwood title, A Jane Austen Encyclopedia as a valuable resources in the study of this ever-popular author. Both academic and public libraries will want to add it. And it is another one of those titles that could just as easily find a place in a circulating collection." - Against the Grain

"All Things Austen provides an impressive amount of well-researched information specific to Austen's era, in a user-friendly format that enables readers easily to navigate not only the encyclopedia's 800+ pages but also relevant references in Austen's works themselves….For the casual Austen reader, All Things Austen enhances one's appreciation of her novels by illuminating nuances otherwise missed. For writers, scholars, and other professionals who need to understand the intricacies of life in Regency England as intimately as we know our own, this encyclopedia will no doubt become a favorite and much-used reference." - JASNA

"Readers looking for plot summaries of Jane Austen's novels or quick biographies of her characters are likely to be surprised when consulting Kristin Olsen's examination of the world depicted in Austen's works. The personal travails of Elinor Dashwood or Emma Woodhouse are not the meat of her rambling essays. Instead her themes are the cultural contexts that defined the interests and opportunities of Austen's characters. Her 150 articles explore the broader understandings of the landed class in Regency England regarding science, education, law and religion, as well as their prejudices toward servants, Gypsies and Jews….For fans of Jane Austen, or for those seeking a better understanding of this historic period, the guide will prove enlightening. For more information on food and drink of the period, readers should see Olsen's equally entertaining Cooking with Jane Austen." - Lawrence Looks at Books

"Any compendium is bound to fascinate, and dipping into this one throws up all sorts of serendipitous delights … [a] useful and enjoyable book." - Janes Austen Society News Letter

Excelente libro!,

Outlaw Journalist: The Life and Times of Hunter S. Thompson, by William McKeen

“Gets it all in: the boozing and drugging . . . but also the intelligence, the loyalty, the inherent decency.” ―Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post

Hunter S. Thompson detonated a two-ton bomb under the staid field of journalism with his magazine pieces and revelatory Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In Outlaw Journalist, the famous inventor of Gonzo journalism is portrayed as never before. Through in-depth interviews with Thompson’s associates, William McKeen gets behind the drinking and the drugs to show the man and the writer―one who was happy to be considered an outlaw and for whom the calling of journalism was life.16 pages of photographs

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Even as a boy in Louisville, Kentucky, Hunter S. Thompson was charismatic, mischievous, and fearless. As the world’s most outrageous journalist, he even looked like a court jester from another planet, with his long limbs, jutting cigarette holder, big aviator glasses, and shorts. But the foulmouthed author of such incendiary works as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the reluctant model for Uncle Duke in Doonesbury wasn’t just a prankster; he truly cared about the world. He covered presidential campaigns with such passion, insight, and literary firepower he makes today’s trivial-pursuit pundits look like robots. After a sequence of spectacular firings from various newspapers, he found a home at Rolling Stone with editor Jann Wenner, who, after Thompson’s 2005 Hemingway-style suicide, put together an oral biography, Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson (2007). Now McKeen, who also knew Thompson, presents a rock-solid, more fully dimensional, empathic, and rollicking portrait. Here is the hectic life, the scorching personality, the audacious acts and improbable triumphs, and, most importantly, a keen assessment of how Thompson revolutionized journalism. A voracious imbiber of booze and narcotics, Thompson declared, “I haven’t found a drug yet that can get you anywhere near as high as sitting at a desk writing.” --Donna Seaman

Review
“A definitive biography. . . . [McKeen] presents the life of this gifted yet troubled artist, warts and all, and he also takes the full measure of Thompson’s journalistic accomplishment . . . a comprehensive portrait.” (Louisville Courier-Journal)

“The best record to date of Thompson’s life.” (New York Observer)

“Essential.” (Miami Herald)

This is the REAL bio, not some celebrity fraud
By A. Kneeland
Sure we've heard about his famous friends, his Rolling Stone cred, all the legendary drug abuse, so much so that it's made him a pop culture caricature. William McKeen is perhaps the first to step behind the curtain, cozy up to the good doctor's real posse and find out just what made the man behind the gonzo tick. This is a history book written for pleasure readers, filled with storytelling, charm, wit and yes, pain. McKeen manages to step back from the HST fame cycle and look again at the writer, the journalist and the very flawed spirit and tell his story with a discerning eye. While other fame-seekers and hangers-on have delved into the mystique with their own bio books, this one brings you the most respectable and honest cast of Thompson and his crazy life. A history and bio that's hard to put down.

Buy the Book, Take the Ride
By J. Marvel
McKeen has quite simply put together the definitive biography on Thompson, a work that would have Hunter writing and sending screeds via fax to everyone, yet deep down secretly admiring for its depth and brilliance. There are many legends, but "Outlaw Journalist" sorts fact from fiction and gives an honest take of Gonzo from beginning to end. There would be no higher tribute to the good doctor than buying McKeen's book and throwing it on the expense account along with three bottles of Wild Turkey and some Doritos ...

The Best!
By Rory Feehan
Here is what Anita Thompson had to say on her blog\about Outlaw Journalist:

" Of all the "Biographies" about Hunter that have come out in the last year, this is definitely the best. William was a friend to Hunter, had an academic history with him, and his book shows his interest in Hunter's work, more so than just tawdry gossip. It has far fewer inaccuracies than the others. William also managed to put out the book while dealing with his own health issues. So Huge congratulations to him. As Hunter's wife, I highly recommend this book to you!

until next time, your friend,

Anita Thompson"

The Defiant: A True Story of Escape, Survival & Resistance, by Shalom Yoran

While recuperating in a hospital after World War II, a Polish refugee wrote at length about his remarkable experiences in war-torn Europe. The Defiant, his memoir, is the account of a young man who refused to yield to the German onslaught and chose instead to become a Jewish resistance fighter. Chronicling the bravery of a small group of men and women who carried on a forest war, this extraordinary book sheds light on events that few know of in this country.

A vivid and memorable account of survival and fighting back
By Midwest Book Review
The Defiant: A True Story Of Escape, Survival & Resistance is the personal memoir of Shalom Yoran, a young man who dared to become a Jewish resistance fighter in Poland during the grim years of World War II. Yoran's story (and the story of the brave men and women who fought with him), is brought forward from a manuscript which he drafted fifty years ago while recuperating in an Israeli hospital. A vivid and memorable account of survival and fighting back in spite of atrocity and anti-Semitism on all sides, The Defiant is a welcome and highly recommended addition to World War II History collections, Holocaust Studies, and 20th Century Jewish History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Survival For a Dream
By Gary Selikow
The Defiant is the story of Shalom Yoran (born Selim Sznycer)

, and his time spent with the partisans fighting the Nazis in Poland. After three years on the run , with his family , from Nazi mobile killing units , the Nazi terror finally caught up with them and in the little town of Kurzeniec , 1 040 Jewish men , women and children where dragged from their homes and hiding places , murdered and burned. Included among those slaughtered where Selim's parents.

Selim and his brother escaped into the woods and joined the partisans , and heeded the last words of their mother to survive and take vengeance for them.

This is the story of the partisan guerilla warfare against Nazi terror.

Although Selim fought among non-Jews , he always fought first and foremost as a Jew - with them but not as one of them. He dreamed of having his own country , of fighting for it and even dying for it-that is what kept him alive. The dream of surviving and living in the Land of Israel as a free Jew and building it.

After the war , his dream was fulfilled , and having escaped the Soviet Army that tried to draft him , and the British blockade that tried to keep Jews out of Palestine , he settled in Israel and joined the airforce , becoming a prominent businessman in Israel.

The Zionists in Europe where always the backbone of Jewish resistance to Nazism.
