About the Author
A native of Los Angeles, Justin Henderson spent much of his childhood and young adulthood surfing the California beaches. After his graduation from California State University, Northridge, his career took him to several locations across the country. He worked as an architectural journalist in New York City, and later moved to Seattle, where he worked as a freelance travel and design writer. It was in Seattle that he took up windsurfing, reviving his long-dormant surfing skills and his passion for the ocean. Justin then moved with his wife and daughter to Sayulita, 30 miles north of Puerto Vallarta. In his years living there, Justin learned to love Mexico even more than he did as a child when his family would vacation on Lake Chapala every summer. He is currently working on the latest edition of Moon Puerto Vallarta as well as a memoir of his five years in Sayulita, tentatively called Paradise on the Five Year Plan.

Justin has written guidebooks on destinations ranging from Costa Rica to Los Angeles, and now Oaxaca, as well as six murder mysteries featuring a female travel writer and photographer which are set on Caribbean islands, in Costa Rica, and all over Mexico.

Justin and his family recently returned to Seattle, though he considers anywhere near the Pacific to be home. His first purchase there was a new wetsuit.

Only good for older, affluent tourists

Decent info, but not organized as intuitively as other guides. I also thought the content seems pretty geared toward "on-the beaten path" tourists, as opposed to travelers. That said, it's the only book available on Oaxaca (not just Mexico) that I could find that was new. UPDATE: now that I used it in Oaxaca, I can say it's just not that helpful. It's written like a novel, and is not good for quick reference on the go. Perhaps I'm bias to Lonely Planet, but this will be my last Moon book.

Falls really short of the Moon standard

I'm a devoted Moon buyer, but this one has fallen really short of the mark. As someone else mentioned, the maps and listings are terribly cross-referenced -- you are constantly having to rove and rove to find what you're looking for, when it would have been so easy to design the maps more intuitively -- not to mention that half the listings don't even show up on the maps. Also, the choices are sh*t -- Oaxaca has more than a dozen restaurants. I generally love Moon for its narrative style -- you feel like you're being spoken to by a real human being, who had a subjective but authentic experience -- but this one gives the series a bad name.

it is perfect for a new visitor to Oaxaca and I would ...

Not that much information to be sincere, I know more than the author, we wanted a very detailed guide with much more places and more specific recomendations, it is perfect for a new visitor to Oaxaca and I would really recomend it to first timers, but after being in Oaxaca more than 20 times I think the information is a little thing from what I was expecting.

Wow! Interesting tale

I picked this book up after reading the description and I was instantly captivated by the storyline. Starting in the Carpathian Mountains during the winter of 1875, "Europe Has Fallen" follows the exploits of a unit of British Royal Engineers working with their Austrian allies as they are confronted by a mysterious and evil army made up of the stuff from nightmares. The action is fierce, the heroes brave and though they seem stiff and reserved at first, the characters become well-developed as the story flows along. As a history buff, I find a lot of the details fascinating and the thought of facing an army of monsters armed with a single shot Martini-Henry rifle is terrifying.

This book features an ensemble of British, Austrian, and Prussian soldiers who are trying to do their duty while facing impossible odds, but of these, Captain Heyward becomes the central protagonist as the fighting continues. His flashbacks to his happy family and adoring wife are real tearjerkers as he prepares himself to face an army of flesh eaters, giant wolves and other monsters too terrible to mention.

This book is the first in what I suspect will be a very successful series. I can't wait for the next book to arrive.

The characters are mostly military as this is an epic good versus evil war. The action is quick and easy to follow. I liked the book. The author is quite talented.

This is great book. The translation is good, but no the greatest. It is wonderful for studying the philosophical view on politics.

A Great Introduction to Science Fiction

Norby the Mixed- Up Robot

First, let me say that the Norby series is an ideal way to introduce Science Fiction to a young adult or to a middle school student. My guess is that boys will like this series more than girls, but what the hey, maybe girls would like it as well. It is written by Janet Asimov, Isaac Asimov's wife.

As I'm sure you know Isaac Asimov was the Father of Science Fiction Robots. (The Robots of Dawn, the Caves of Steel, the Complete Robot, etc). He's the one who invented the three laws of Robotics; in fact, he coined the phrase Robotics.

Now as to the age of the reader. I would guess that a bright seventh grader would enjoy this series. Jeff Wells, the protagonist is fourteen, that's probably a good mid-range age for the reader. I believe that reading science fiction can expand one's vocabulary and expose one to some new and fascinating ideas; also, it can expand one's sense of wonder and help create a love of reading.
In this book Norby battles against Ing the Ingrate. Now I don't know about you ,but I don't believe that "ingrate" was in my lexicon in the seventh grade. This book reveals that Norby has certain special capabilities, such as the ability to feel emotions and anti-gravity capabilities. He can also go into hyper-space.

The Little Robot Who Could

Norby, the Mixed-Up Robot (1983) is the first SF novel in the Norby Series. Norby is the product of McGillicuddy -- a genius level space explorer -- who found an alien spaceship in the asteroid belt. Norby was constructed in a stainless steel barrel used to transport nails and has various and sundry components from the alien ship.

In this novel, Cadet Jeff Wells is really in trouble. While trying to use the main computer network to sleep-learn Martian Swahili, he accidentally scrambled the recipes in the kitchen computer. Federation Security Agent Two Gidlow intends to take Jeff back to headquarters to probe his brain for the presence of any classified material.

Admiral Yobo of Space Command is skeptical of Agent Gidlow's charges. He calls Jeff's older brother -- Farley Gordon Wells -- and discusses the situation with him. Fargo suggests that Jeff be sent home by matter transmitter as soon as possible.

Admiral Yobo tells Jeff to do as Fargo says and even gives him some credits to buy a used teaching robot so that he can learn Martian Swahili. Jeff packs -- not hard with the little allowed a cadet -- and heads home. After dropping his stuff off at home, he heads out to buy a teaching robot.

The salesman tries to talk Jeff into putting a down payment on a newer model, but Jeff finds Norby behind all the other robots and buys him for a reasonable amount. It helps that Norby had not been talking to the salesman and was therefore thought to have failing faculties. Jeff immediately takes Norby home with him.

In this story, Norby displays some unusual properties, including a lack of the usual three laws of robotics. He doesn't obey commands very well, but tries to protect Jeff and himself. He is also good-natured, but his feelings are easily hurt.

Fargo does not come home to meet Jeff for the summer solstice rites. Shortly before sunrise, Norby wakes Jeff and takes him to Central Park. Jeff is rather surprised by the method, since Norby has a very small anti-gravity device concealed within his barrel. Jeff enjoys the ride, but Norby complains about power usage.

When they reach the park, Norby has a little trouble with the landing. It is survivable, but somewhat erratic. Jeff lands on his hands and knees in mud and Norby lands in the fish pond. When Norby soars up out of the pond, he rotates and showers Jess with pond water.

Despite this mishap, Jess leads Norby to the proper site. They wait for Fargo, but he doesn't appear. Suddenly three men run out on the high walkway. Fargo seems to be running away from two men. Jeff has Norby lift them over the two pursuers and then they drop on the men, knocking them unconscious.

The two men are henchmen of Ing the Ingrate, wannabe Emperor of the Solar System. Fargo uses their own truth wand to learn something of the situation. Then a cop shows up in an anti-gravity car and insists on taking in Fargo and Ing's men. Jeff leaves for home. Then things start getting really complicated.

This story is a straight forward action tale, with a few moments for introspection and discussion. Norby tries hard and assists Jeff in some very weird ways -- after all, he is mixed-up -- but he always seems to do the right thing eventually. Jeff thinks highly of the little robot.

This story is very short, but leaves lots of loose ends for the sequels to develop. Enjoy!

Highly recommended for younger Asimov fans (and for some older ones too) as well as for anyone else who enjoys tales of space adventures, evil villains, and mixed-up robots.

The first in The Norby series for juveniles.

This is the first volume in a series of short science fiction novels for young teenagers about a 14-year-old Space Academy cadet, Jeff Wells, and his unusual robot, Norby. Norby has skills that other robots lack, apparently due to the incorporation of alien parts in his construction. In this first book of the series, Jeff and Norby foil a plot of a villian to take over the Solar System. Norby discovers he has "anti-gravity" capabilities as well as the ability to travel through "hyperspace" and great distances. [Isaac Asimov, in another book, apologizes for using antigravity in this series: he felt that it represented poor science.] The second book in the series is "Norby's Other Secret," published in 1984. These two books were latered reissued as "The Norby Chronicles."

CHRIS SOLARSKI is an artist-game designer and author of the seminal book, Drawing Basics and Video Game Art: Classic to Cutting-Edge Art Techniques for Winning Game Design (Watson-Guptill 2012), which has been translated into Japanese and Korean. Chris’ professional background―which mixes game art development at Sony Computer Entertainment and fine art figurative painting―has led him to lecture on emotions and storytelling in video games at international events including the Smithsonian Museum's landmark The Art of Video Games exhibition, SXSW, Game Developers Conference, and FMX. Chris’ personal projects at Solarski Studio continue to explore the intersections between video games, classical art and film to develop new forms of player interaction and emotionally-rich experiences in games.

Best of its type. The only book of its type, though.

Not that any vocabulary book is something to deify and celebrate the way one might laud and glorify the brilliant prose and ideas of your favorite novelist, it does seem to me the best vocabulary building book I've found whose purpose is to broaden one's vocabulary. Each 'lesson' is constructed 'inductively,' which means you get clues to the meaning of new words, and then use inference to understand them. If you are philosophically against memorizing vocabulary lists, this is an excellent resource. If you are a flashcard vocabulary building type, it might not suit your personality.

Ideal for test takers and those who seek to improve their passive vocabulary

For those who seek to master their usage this probably isn't the book for you. The definitions are too scant. For example - "castigate - to correct by punishing." No note here to avoid using it as a synonym for physical punishment. Or for "mundane" we get one word - "wordly". No mention the word is most commonly used in place of "dull." Another objection I have is the amount of war and violence figuring into the examples. References to Columbine, earthquakes, crime, Gulf War, organized crime, WWII, pandemics, etc... abound. Non-native speakers must think every American or Brit does nothing but rob banks and die of AIDs. The authors should consider revising the book's tone to something less depressing.

The Kindle Version - A must buy !

This book is great for people who are studying for the GRE. It helps you learn words in an unusual manner that makes the words stick. When you mug up words (a dry and boring task), they tend to become a big gooey mess in your head when you try to recollect the meanings several days and many words later. You tend to get confused and mix up meanings and words. This book saves you from that, as it forces you to learn the words through usage. The book starts with a paragraph using the new words and stimulates your brain to deduce the meaning of the word based on how it has been used. It then gives you an exercise that makes you fill in blanks using these words. This way the words do stick. I have noticed that I have been able to retain the words and meanings for longer this way. The Kindle version is particularly useful because everything is linked and indexed in such a way that all you need to do to access an answer to a question is click on the question number and it will take you to the answer. It saves you the trouble of flipping through pages and locating the answers for the correct exercise. Almost everything can be done with a few clicks on the mouse. Also, the 'highlight' and 'bookmark' features are great to revise words and to track your progress. If you are using a Kindle Reader App on a laptop, you can double click on a word and may get the option to download an additional dictionary, once this is done you will have the ability to click on any word used in the book and get its meaning and usage straight from this dictionary. This is particularly helpful when you want to explore different definitions/usage examples of a word to be confident about them. Another big advantage is that you can download the Kindle Reader on most tablets and smart phones and once you have done that , you can send copies of this book to all of them, sync them and use them on the go. If you are unsure, you could download a sample of the kindle version of this book and try it out for your self. This is my second week with this book and I am loving it. I will get back with an update in a couple of weeks.
