Works great, very fast, no compatibility issues with devices that support SDXC. Was able to do 93.53MB/s sequential reads and 56.63MB/s sequential writes. The random writes are slower, so this wouldn't be great for an OS (like a Raspberry Pi). But perfectly designed and very fast for a camera recording images or video.

ALERT! These may not be truly UHS-I U3

[[VIDEOID:c9b61fbda6b9c8d82898da1d315621d6]] I purchase this in order to record 4k on my Sony AX33 using the 100mbs for the highest quality 4k (vs 60mbs). I install the card and I set to 100mbs but, receive a message that I must install a U3 card. That is what I purchased. I did some research online and found a reference where some where having the same issue and others were not. I decided to go to a local store and I found the exact same PNY SD card. I purchased it and tried it at home. Well guess what? It worked! Not errors. I looked at both packages in great detail and only found a few differences. Note the pictures: The SD card on the right DOES work as a UHS-I U3 @ 100mbs the one on the left I purchased from amazon and is NOT recognized as a UHS-I U3. Works perfectly -- and at a great price

I got this card about 10 days ago and have used it extensively. I was particularly interested in its U3 speed rating, since I shoot lots of 4K video at a speed of 100 Mbps (I use a Panasonic ZS100 camera). So far, this 128GB PNY SD card has worked perfectly, with no hiccups or problems. Even with 4K video at 100 Mbps, it can hold a LOT of video.

Good price and no glitches -- excellent product.

June 2, 2016 edit: I've now used this card for a month, extensively shooting 4K video. There has not been one glitch with this card -- excellent performance at a great price.

Tiny, tiny font size makes this difficult to read

Good quality paper with print so small I shall need a magnifying glass to read it (and I don't wear reading glasses - my eyesight is good!) Such a disappointment as only about half the page is actually used (large margins). Increase the font and narrow the margins and this would be a delightful publication to read. As it is, reading this Trollope will be hard work.

George A. Kiraz is the founder and director of Beth Mardutho: The Syriac Institute, and the president of Gorgias Press. He earned an MSt in Syriac Studies from Oxford University, and an MPhil and PhD from Cambridge University. He has an extensive list of publications in Syriac studies.

Great Introduction to the Syriac Language

I've been wanting to learn Syriac for some time, but have been a bit intimidated by the available materials. So I was very happy to find this excellent text book.

Dr. Kiraz is, I suspect, and very engaging teacher. It's rare to find myself laughing out loud when studying a classical language, but Dr. Kiraz makes the process profoundly enjoyable.

He gives a graded introduction to the script - probably the hardest thing for many beginners - and the teaches major grammatical concepts clearly through a series of his own exercises. The 6th chapter of the book then gives extended reading from a wide range of ancient and modern Syriac literature.

An additional help is audio materials supporting all the readings in the book - these audio recordings can be downloaded from the Gorgias Press website, and are invaluable to get pronunciation, cadence, and a "feel" for the language. The book is also significantly less expensive direct from Gorgias...

This book is, of course, introductory, and I'm moving on to more advanced grammars before I get to the Peshitta new testament. But as an introduction to rich, fascinating, and beautiful language, the text book has no peer that I've seen.

I loved this play. It's entirely in German, so probably best for intermediate learners who want to expand their vocabulary, or native speakers. I found it highly entertaining and amusing. A great book which I kept even after I was done with the class.

A solid discussion of casual games and gamers

I'm the sort of gamer that Jesper Juul is writing about in this book. I would occasionally play arcade games as a kid (I miss Tempest!), but the first video game I played regularly was Tetris on the Mac. Nowadays I play several kinds of solitaire and match-three games like Bejeweled Blitz and Candy Crush Saga, as well as things like 2048.

Juul's book is a collection of loosely linked essays that discuss both casual games and casual gamers. He makes the effort to look at the two on their own terms, rather than ring the changes on the already existing range of narratives concerning them. About half the book consists of appendices that document interviews Juul made with gameplayers and game developers, and Juul relies on these interviews heavily. One of the really good essays is an attempt to write a history of matching-tile games.

This is one of the better books on video games I've read--well-written and full of interesting ideas.

Great reminder not to compare ourselves to others

I did this Bible study with some neighbor friends and it's a great devotional/ study. We watched the video that went along with it but you could easily go through this yourself as a devotional. It talks about the importance of not comparing yourself to others around you because when you do that you pick and choose other peoples best features and its unrealistic to hold yourself to that standard. You are fine because you are His child, you are fine the way you are. Don't fall into the caparison trap, it only steals your joy, your peace and occupies your mind from the grace that God is giving us. Great reminder to know that we are fine the way we are.

I loved this book! I read this book all the time as a constant reminder of the comparison trap. I love the accompanying videos and the interactive nature of the book. It forces you to not stay the same and think the same comparison thoughts. The videos are short and engaging.

About the Author
Major General J.F.C. Fuller (1878-1966) was one of the most important and original military thinkers of this century. He served as lieutenant in the Boer War, organized the first British tank corps in World War I, and developed the strategy and tactics of tank warfare which were later put to such effective use by the Nazis for their World War II blitzkriegs. His many books include A Military History of the Western World (3 volumes), The Generalship of Ulysses S. Grant, Julius Caesar: Man, Soldier, and Tyrant, and The Generalship of Alexander the Great, all of which are available from Da Capo Press/Perseus Book Group.

Fuller's World of Military History Vol 1

This is a classic work which should be read by any serious student of military history. Fuller's writing is of the British officer class of a bygone era, which means some of his views or opinions may not be pass the politically correct litmust test! In particular the chapter concerning the Christian Kingdoms of the Crusades has a famous quote whereby Fuller attributes part of the reason for their decline was due to mongrolization with the local Arab women! Fuller was a bit of an outcast in his day despite his earlier involvement in the development of mechanziaed warfare in WW1 and his later writings of between the world wars. The narrow mindedness of the British peace time army did not go over well with him. His theories of modern tank warfare were considered too radical for the establishment. Fuller would quit the army and in a controversial move join the British Facist Party. He was also something of a mystic, and no doubt had other personality quirks as well. The Germans would pay greater attention to his writings in the 1930s than the British. Sadly ironic, and one can see perhaps why he grew frustrated with regimental life.

Not withstanding some personal observations which certainly do add color, much of what he has to say about warfare is quite fascinating. Fuller has a knack to sum up entire periods of military doctrine and innovation as it pertains to the cultural or societal ethos of an historical period. This enables his prose to flow elegantly from one historical period to another. The reader can appreciate the full depth of events and entire periods very easily.

The main strength of this book is its sheer size and scope. Major battles that in the author's mind were pivital turning points in History are discussed in some detail. Smaller linking chatpters outline the societal and political forces that were in play and serve to connect the events. As with any book of this nature some may consider that certain battles and periods deserve greater mention than others. Also, the emphasis of this work is decidedly Occidental, or Western European in outlook. The East and Orient figure only in so much as it impacts on Western Military outlook. Again, perhaps somewhat biased, but no more so than similier works who tend to concentrate on those other areas of the world. This series can also serve as a wonderful reference as each chapter is almost self-contained. A reader needing a refresher of the Crusades for example can read that chapter and get a pretty good summation.

This is merely the 1st volume of 3 which goes from antiquity up to the great naval battle of Lepanto in 1571. The reader is strongly urged to read the entire series as it stands as a classic of its kind. With this work one can get an almost complete view of Western Military History. Its a graduate course in Military History!

A Whirlwind Tour Through History

I have just completed reading all three volumes of this eminently readable and enjoyable tome so I preface this review by asserting that the remarks apply to all three volumes.

First of all, this is essentially one large "Decisive Battles of the West" type of study. Even at three large volumes, it is impossible for a "military history" to even approach comprehensiveness, but virtually every consensus "decisive battle" of history is present and fleshed out with prelude, narrative, and analysis. Fuller never loses sight of the context and meaning of the battle in the war in which it took place or in the greater history of the West. The battle narratives are generally thrilling and well discussed with ample geographical and battle maps to aid the reader.

The massive nature of the study allows for Fuller to slowly unveil the evolution of military weaponry and its effect on both strategy and tactics (as well as political and social organization) but it would have been more helpful to the reader to have some pictures of the weapons. I had a hard time understanding terminology like "matchlock" and "flintlock."

Fuller, a general himself, does get bogged down in the minutiae of the military narrative at times, with too much detail about formations and military organization and the marching chronology from town A to town B. Unless one is intimately familiar with the local geography or is an expert in a particular war, such details are pretty much useless. Nevertheless, the narrative is generally fluid and is punctuated by 'between battle" chronicles which are a nice refresher course in general Western political history. When Fuller is not speaking like a general talking to his officers about battle chronology, he is an enjoyable read. Either way, such portions can be easily skipped over without missing much of the story.

Regarding the choices of battles for discussion, one wonders how a monumental battle like Milvian Bridge (where Constantine won while using the sign of the Cross) is omitted. The battle is never even mentioned. Yarmouk (636 AD) is another one that Fuller missed but deserves mention since, if the battle was lost, it could have made the Muslim ArabConquests stillborn. If Manzikert is decisive, why not Yarmouk? Caesar was almost defeated at the siege of Alesia by Vercengetorix, but incredibly survived by his brilliant double circumvallation. Yet Alesia is never mentioned. It is debatable whether Watling Street should have been omitted. Had the outnumbered Romans not annihilated the Boudica-led Iceni, could Britain have been lost to Rome and a Celtic stronghold been established? I think it deserves merit but Watling Street is never mentioned. If memory serves me correctly, the Siege of Vienna was likewise omitted from discussion.

One can also criticize Fuller for his inclusion of the Russo-Japanese War, which took place in Asia, and the decision to discuss Chattanooga instead of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. To be fair, this is a military history and not a "decisive battles" collection and some of these battles are rarely considered decisive in other volumes (except Gettysburg of course).

Where Fuller shines and where the volumes are most contributory is the heavy anti-PC discussion in the third volume. Here, Fuller (who was also an occultist) does not mince words and is refreshingly non-orthodox in his analysis and conclusions about the two world wars, on both the political and military levels. Wilson, Churchill, Roosevelt, and Truman are skewered by Fuller for being foolish and hypocritical ideologues that were more interested in ideology than pragmatism and chose to oppose one dictator by befriending another. Roosevelt particularly does not fare well under Fuller's brush and almost seems to have been prostrate before Stalin's feet.

Fuller convincingly shows how Roosevelt forced America into war by compelling the Japanese into attacking Pearl Harbor. Further, he condemns the unnecessary atrocities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These views remain controversial but I wholeheartedly concur with Fuller on his conclusions. Of course, Hitler does not escape Fuller's critical eye and Hitler is shown clearly for having been much of the direct cause for Germany's failure due to Adolph's arrogant and persistent interference in military strategy. He faults Hitler for not taking all of North Africa when he had a chance, but also criticizes the Allies for attacking neutral French North Africa.

Some of the WW2 analysis is now dated because we are in a post Soviet Empire era, but Fuller makes a strong case and, if the Soviet Empire did not collapse as it did, would still be pertinent today. It is simply inexcusable how the Allies could have allowed all of Eastern Europe to fall to Soviet hegemony. Nevertheless, Fuller does seem to be something of a Russophobe at times.

Despite all of this focus here and in other reviews on 20th century warfare, the 20th century is only a small percentage of the three volumes. Terrific discussions of critical battles in the Persian Wars, Peloponnesian War, Punic Wars, Mithradatic Wars, Roman Civil Wars, Hunnish invasion, Justinian Wars, Muslim Conquests, Crusades, Hundred Years War, English Civil Wars, Thirty Years War, War of Spanish Succession, Great Northern War, Seven Years War, French and Indian War, American Revolution, Napoleonic Wars, American Civil War, and Franco-Prussian War are discussed at length.

Some reviewers here could not handle the non-orthodoxy of Fuller's trenchant analysis and have resorted to inane epithets. This is to be expected by a heavily propagandized generation. The value of reading an impartial, erudite and accomplished general who writes well and who is not "owned" by any one side is worth the price of admission and the time required to absorb.
