I bought this book for my Girlfriend as we have embarked on a journey. She read the book in a few hours and started to put the principals to work right away. I love it and her. She now rules the roost and more personal things that I have no control over. Our , (Her) life has become so much better and easier because of it and me.

Loss of Freedom
By No Longer in Control
My wife and I decided to give this a try. Using the methods in this book she has successfully taken control of my manhood. It is as if she owns the gear now. I can't say that I don't enjoy it. But my wife is REALLY having a good time with this. So much so that she has commented that I will be permanently locked up for the rest of my life!

Dead Solid Look At Vintage Pro Golf

Before Tiger, before Jack, before Big Bertha, there was Arnold Palmer and a 40-week season where golf's greatest players paid cost for their wardrobes and counted themselves lucky being able to spend a weekend at the Holiday Inn.

Dan Jenkins followed the sport closely as a columnist with Sports Illustrated, and his work is still regarded as definitive examples of sports journalism. At its best, "The Dogged Victims Of Inexorable Fate" documents what made golf special in the 1960s before it became the superstar circuit it is today.

On Palmer, the King of the sport during that decade, though he never won a major after 1964, Jenkins writes movingly in one essay: "He is the most immeasurable of golf champions. But this is not entirely true because of all that he has won, or because of the mysterious fury with which he has managed to rally himself. It is partly because of the nobility he has brought to losing. And more than anything, it is true because of the pure, unmixed joy he has brought to trying."

Most of the time, Jenkins foregoes the heartstrings and settles for the funny bone. Take his lead on the PGA Tour's most august tournament: "It is commonly known among a select group of Masters goers that many of the best shots of the tournament are served in tall paper cups on the upstairs porch of the Augusta National Golf Club." About a freespending golfer of an earlier era: "If Jimmy Demaret had won the money he would have been 8 to 5 to leave it in a bar or blow it on a handmade pair of orange and purple saddle oxfords."

Funny stuff. Jenkins also scores points in summing up the histories of tournaments and eras in ways that are definitive and deceptively breezy. Reading him is to get a sense of how golf writing moved from the stodgy versifying of Herbert Warren Wind to the snarky cool of Rick Reilly and Alan Shipnuck, not to mention the gang in the 18th hole tower at CBS. For that, and other things, he may well have been the most revolutionary golf writer, and this book offers some prize examples why.

But there's something to be said for stodgy, too. Wind was not a snappy writer, but he was a measured and thorough one, and reading his account of golf's beginnings in America feels more like the real deal. Jenkins too often uses situations and characters as backboards for his zings and one-liners, then moves on, whereas Wind or another writer might linger and find something of value. Jenkins doesn't quote the players so much as channel them through his narrative, and though it is readable, it's suspect, too. He's also an impossibly snobby overdog, focusing on the favorites and ignoring the field. He seems to watch every tournament from the most exclusive part of the clubhouse, in the company of CEOs and Ben Hogan. He doesn't fawn, but he doesn't find a seat closer to the crowd, either.

At least two of his essays, a faux-Runyanesque tale of a freeloader living off Tour luminaries and an account of a round with several Hollywood stars, seem like excuses for hobnobbing and overstay their welcome. But the rest vary in quality from illuminating to awe-inspiring.

The second-to-last piece, "The Glory Game," is considered one of sports writing's all-time best. It's a really great first-person account about a group of compulsive gamblers who play on a Fort Worth muni course that whips through its longer-than-average length. Also terrific is "The Big Window," which details how CBS covered the 1966 Masters by putting the reader in the control room with blustery producer Frank Chirkinian.

Jenkins' book isn't up there on the top shelf of my golf library with Wind's "The Story Of American Golf," Shipnuck's "Blood, Sweat & Tees," or John Feinstein's "A Good Walk Spoiled," but if you like your sportswriting salty and dry, this is a good jar of peanuts to dig into.

Every year before the British Open I haul out my copy of Dogged Victims and read once again Dan Jenkins' non-fiction account of playing on a links course. Before long, I'm reading out loud to my wife, who -- so far as I know -- has never set foot on a fairway. We have our best laugh of the year, tuck our tattered copy away on the sports book shelf, and look forward to the following summer.

OK, I'll confess. Before the tucking, I sneak out in the backyard with a pint of Junior and read Jenkins' remembrance of Goat Hills. I grew up caddying and loading clubs on carts at a course about a faded persimmon three wood from my house, and this premium example of the sportswriter's art takes me right back to those twilight caddy tournaments -- a ball, a mallet head putter, a flashlight and a pocketful of tees. Listen this July -- you'll hear me howling in the woods.

If you love golf and you haven't read this book, don't die yet.

One for the ages

I bought this book when it was first published and I absolutely loved it. I was in college and was so envious of Jenkins and his cronies. Doesn't every guy want to have a group of crazy friends who can act outrageously without repercussions? Don't we guys all want to know someone who can drive up directly onto the golf course in a Caddy and bet anyone he doesn't have a duck in the car? When I was in my dorm sharing a room with a nerd and pretty much having no friends I thought these guys were the coolest guys in the world. It's the funniest sports book, maybe any book I've ever read. If you love golf you will love the history of the sport from a master sports writer. Even if you don't you will enjoy reading about the way the pro tour was prior to todays' sanitized version. Those guys certainly had some character. If I can figure out how to do it I want to send my first copy to Jenkins and have him sign it for me.

About the Author

RAYMOND M. BROOKS is a Professor of Finance at Oregon State University. He has taught a variety of finance courses, including introduction to financial management, investments, advanced corporate finance, financial institutions, financial planning, and risk management. Previously, he taught at Washington University in St. Louis; the University of Southern Illinois, Edwardsville; and the University of Missouri–Columbia. Professor Brooks has authored a variety of articles on topics from dividends to when-issued trading. He has twice won best papers awards at financial conferences. Great Read

As usual Ms. Rochelle has outdone herself! I enjoyed the character development in this book. Watching Rayne blossom into the self confident person, while also watching Lance take charge of his life as refreshing. I would love to know what happened to Ariel. I also can't wait to read what I hope is a sequel about Coty and India.

An enjoyable read!

Rayne Doe (aka Nevetta Yardley) is a beautiful black woman who is found on the road by Dr Lance Carey. Nevetta cannot remember who she is, where she came from and why she was lying on the road. She is attracted to and cares very much for Lance the man who saved her and brought her to his clinic so she could receive the very best medical care.

Dr Lance Carey names her Rayne Doe as she suffers from amnesia and cannot remember anything about herself. Lance is very attracted to Nevetta but he cannot tell if his feelings are returned. Whilst feeling this strong attraction to Nevetta, he is currently dating Ariel Hawes. This is the major reason why he cannot pursue a relationship with Nevetta because he is not a free man and, therefore, he dares not engage in a new relationship, until he is no longer tethered to Ariel.

In order to express their hidden emotions for each other, they have to deal with the barriers to their relationship. Lance has to remove Ariel from his life. This will not prove easy to do because Ariel is a bitter vindictive woman who does not really love Lance but wants him for his money and prestige. Nevetta has to deal with the possibility that she may already be a married woman with a husband and children who care for and need her. She may have a boyfriend beside himself searching for her. How can she give into her feelings for Lance when there is so much uncertainty about who she is?

Lance and Nevetta reach out to grasp a love that could be taken away from them at any moment if Nevetta’s memory returns and confirms who she really is. The enemy is her memory! If it returns, Nevetta could be taken away from Lance and neither of them want that. Nevetta wants to remember who she is, in order that she can love Lance freely. Lance is afraid that the return of her memory could be the end of their relationship because their love may not be strong enough to survive full disclosure of who she might truly be!

An enjoyable read!

Must Read for Football Fans

We’ve read and reviewed dozens and dozens of books about the English Premier League. But Jim White’s Premier League: A History in 10 Matches is a bit different and consequently, better as a result.

White is a talented and renowned sportswriter and his quality shines through in this book. While choosing a certain number of matches to highlight is not a novel idea, White gives the approach a new spin. His ten choices are solid ones to say the least and he recalls each in superb detail.
It all starts with the beginning of the Premier League and finishes with the 2013/14 season. This is an updated version that has a lot more than a discussion of ten matches. Tables, stats, interesting facts and tidbits, and incredible photos are the icing on the cake so to speak. A great book gets even better with the update.

I guess the biggest takeaway from this great title is how much the Premier League has grown, transforming English football and the global game in the process. What started out as a way to save the game in England has literally changed everything related to the beautiful game. The EPL is known in every corner of the world thanks to massive broadcast deals and creative branding by teams and the league itself. The success of the EPL has caused other leagues to step up their game as well, giving La Liga and the Bundesliga greater worldwide appeal.

This book captures the best from the history of the Premier League and is a must read for absolutely any football fan.

Terrific

Well written with wonderful inside information. I learned so much about the league I never knew but in an extremely entertaining way. It's one of those books that I just,wanted to keep going. Of course, for someone who isn't a football fan and particularly a Premier League fan it won't be as meaningful but even for those non fans it is a wonderful read.

William E. Boyce received his B.A. degree in Mathematics from Rhodes College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is currently the Edward P. Hamilton Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Science Education (Department of Mathematical Sciences) at Rensselaer. He is the author of numerous technical papers in boundary value problems and random differential equations and their applications. He is the author of several textbooks including two differential equations texts, and is the coauthor (with M.H. Holmes, J.G. Ecker, andW.L. Siegmann) of a text on using Maple to explore Calculus. He is also coauthor (with R.L. Borrelli and C.S. Coleman) of Differential Equations LaboratoryWorkbook (Wiley 1992), which received the EDUCOMBest Mathematics Curricular InnovationAward in 1993. Professor Boyce was a member of the NSF-sponsored CODEE (Consortium for Ordinary Differential Equations Experiments) that led to the widely-acclaimed ODE Architect. He has also been active in curriculum innovation and reform. Among other things, he was the initiator of the "Computers in Calculus" project at Rensselaer, partially supported by the NSF. In 1991 he received the William H.Wiley Distinguished FacultyAward given by Rensselaer.

Horrible Book

Never before have I encountered a [Math] book with as many words as the one that I am currently writing a review for. Rather than show the reader visually of why things are, the authors have taken it upon themselves to take the approach of explaining via verbose text why things are. While some may find this a better approach, the fact that there exists very little examples proves this method futile and frustrating. The ONLY thing salvageable from this book is the inclusion of the answers in the back of the book. Even then, if one wants to truly learn differential equations, another book should be sought.

Terrible Book

This book is poorly written, overly verbose, and poorly structured. After having consulted some other references, having figured out how to do the problems, and having completed the assigned problems, I am still unable to make ANY sense at all out of the book's explanations. Another specific criticism: In just about every section, the author introduces some new method or theorem in the problems, leaving the exercise to the reader. These introductions are very incomplete, and leave students groping in the dark. Then there are additional problems, "Using the method of problem x, solve..." Quite frustrating. Seriously, textbook publishers give free books to instructors... Do they look at them before making a selection? And for the price of this book, I expect to be able to learn differential equations just by putting the book under my pillow at night.
