Staging the French Revolution: Cultural Politics and the Paris Opera, 1789-1794 moves these discussions boldly forward, focusing on the Paris Opéra (Académie Royale de Musique) in the cultural and political context of the early French Revolution. Both institutional history and cultural study, this is the first ever full-scale study of the Revolution and lyric theatre. The book concentrates on three aspects of how a royally-protected theatre negotiates the transition to national theatre: the external dimension, such as questions of ownership and governance and the institution's relationship with State institutions and popular assemblies; the internal management, finances, selection and preparation of works; and the cultural and aesthetic study of the works themselves and of their reception.

In Staging the French Revolution, author Mark Darlow offers an unprecedented view of the material context of opera production, combining in-depth archival research with a study of the works themselves. He argues that a mixture of popular and State interventions created a repressive system in which cultural institutions retained agency, compelling individuals to follow and contribute to a shifting culture. Theatre thereby emerged as a locus for competing discourses on patriotism, society, the role of the arts in the Republic, and the articulation of the Revolution's relation with the 'Old Regime', and is thus an essential key to the understanding of public opinion and publicity at this crucial historical moment. Combining recent approaches to institutions, sociability, and authors' rights with cultural studies of opera, Staging the French Revolution takes a historically grounded and methodologically innovative cross-disciplinary approach to opera and persuasively re-evaluates the long-standing, but rather sterile, concept of propaganda.

Ulrich Wiehle is director of cometis AG in Wiesbaden, Germany. The veteran flyboy tale-spinner (The Intruders, 1994, etc.) rewrites the near-future-war formulawith splendid results. With the high-tech thriller genre suffering from a shortage of drawing-board hardware and credible villains, it's wonderful to find Coonts breaking free from Clancy-esque overplotting to craft an oddly optimistic war drama that's less about the mechanics of warfare than the conflicted loyalties of the soldiers who'll fight it. The admittedly contrived scenario involves a plan by fanatical right-wing Japanese Prime Minister (and Yukio Mishima fan) Atsuko Abe to annex oil-rich portions of Siberia by using a squadron of radar-invisible Zero fighter jets and an illicit nuclear arsenal. American President David Hood, eager to meddle but not get officially involved, sends a bunch of F-22 fighters with a crew of crackerjack flyboys to ``assist'' Russian President Aleksandr Kalugin, a maniac with Stalin-esque ambitions and a few nuclear warheads left over from the bad old days. Once the fighting starts, Coonts wisely shifts his story away from the heavily caricatured government leaders to an assortment of middle- to upper-level flyboys, spies, and submarine crewmen whose patriotism and stoic devotion to duty are complicated by feelings of sympathy and camaraderie with ``the enemy.'' They are also, to a man (and woman, a tough-as-nails fighter pilot and one of Coonts's more memorable creations), horrified at the devastation they're about to unleash. Superb battle scenes, in the air or under Tokyo Harbor, lead to a climactic aerial dogfight between Jack Cassidy, an emotionally vulnerable F-22 squadron commander, and his Japanese opposite numberCaptain Jiro Kimura. Nice try, but no "Flight of the Intruder"

My last Coonts book was Minatour which I thought was a pretty good fictional story on developing the next A6. Good character development, good technical writing about plane tactics and developments, and nice twists involving government bureaucracies and espionage.
But Fortunes of War had none of that. The characters were thin, if not transparent. The plot line was a bit hard to swallow. (A Russia so poor it didn't have even ONE ICBM left??? What's more, Japan with all its economic and technological prowess couldn't field one ICBM???)
And I never got the feeling of "being there," of sitting in a "smart skin" F-22 right alongside Cassidy and wondering about how to find, let alone shoot down a totally stealthy plane like the new Zero. (Think about it, WW-I air tactics at supersonic speeds! Wow! If ONLY Coonts had spent MORE time on that!!!)
Worst of all... the character development was SO THIN, I never empathized with ANY of them. So when it came to the big "show down" at the end, where Cassidy is faced with that "moral" and "emotional" conflict of having to shoot down his good friend Jiro, I couldn't have cared less. And that's a shame. But I suppose this is what I have to settle for until Clancy's Rainbow Six comes out in August!

"A Gripping and Action Packed Ride!"

Awesome action! Coonts proves he can write beyond Jake Grafton (no offense to the heroic admiral). With Japan on the verge of economic disaster, a cadre of right-wing militants murder the pacifist Emporer and sieze power. Then they go after the oil fields in Siberia. With the Russian military falling apart, Japanese success seems assured. Enter Colonel Bob Cassidy and a volunteer group of F-22 pilots who go over to give the Russians a hand. Coonts did a stupendous job with the action. The dogfights between the new Zeros and the F-22s ruled! But by far the best scene, action-wise, was the Russian sub's devestating raid on Tokyo Bay. Unbelievable stuff! Some of Coonts' best scenes take place on the sub. You can feel the stress and the fear of the men aboard as they undertake suicide missions against the best the Japanese Navy has to offer. Death is just one ping away for these guys. All the American pilots had very unique personalities and my one complaint is that Coonts should have featured them a little more. I also would have liked to have seen more interaction between them. But overall, can't fault this book. Definately a winner!

I Loved This Book!!

Fortunes of War has got to be one of the most exciting and enjoyable books I have read in many years. Although the US contingent led by Air Force Colonel Bob Cassidy plays an important part in the outcome of the war, it is the fierce determination of its to main heroes (both Russian), along with the troubled dedication of Cassidy's long time friend Jiro Kimura that really makes this book something special. The Russian characters of Yan Chernov and submarine Capitan Saratov (along with Saratov's supporting crew) are just too cool. If it wasn't for them, Russia wouldn't have had a chance.
Coonts also shows us how supreme power on the part of both the Japanese and Russian leaders, creates a mindset that causes them to forget about the people they govern and causes them to focus only on their own personal gains.
I found myself cheering when the good things happened, and feeling down when the unfortunate occurred. Coonts gives a wonderful description of all of the charac! ters and events that unfold, without boring us with extensive detailed hi-tech information.
I recommend you pick this book up, find a cozy spot to read it, and just enjoy this extremely fast paced highly entertaining novel.

While the map I received is sturdy, useful

While the map I received is sturdy,useful, and amusing, it was not this map. Instead it was a map of the French wine regions reimagined like a Metro map, brightly colored, wide straight lines hooking up wine 'stations' along a route in each of the major areas. Disappointing, because I wanted the map as pictured, to use for navigation and exploration.

About the Author
Richard Béliveau is a leading authority in the field of cancer research. He holds the Chair in the Prevention and Treatment of Cancer at the University of Quebec at Montreal, where he is a professor of biochemistry. Beef with lemongrass

4 servings
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Difficulty: easy

Beef with lemongrass is delicious with perfumed steamed rice seasoned with fish sauce.

175 ml (3/4 cup) vegetable oil
160 g (1 cup) onions, finely sliced
2 tsp garlic, minced
2 tbsp lemongrass, chopped
2 tsp fresh ginger, minced
160 g (1 cup) green onions, finely sliced
500 g (1 lb) beef, Chinese fondue cut
60 ml (1/4 cup) fish sauce (nuoc-­mâm or nam pla)
2 tsp sugar
2 tbsp sesame seeds, toasted
Salt and freshly ground pepper
Several leaves of fresh coriander

Heat the wok over high heat, add the oil and cook the onions, garlic, lemongrass, ginger, green onions, and beef over medium-­high heat for 1 to 2 minutes.

Add the fish sauce, sugar, and sesame seeds. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and cook for 1 to 2 minutes over medium-­high heat.

Serve immediately, garnishing with the coriander leaves.

Oat and ginger shortbread cookies

24 cookies
Preparation time: 1 h 15
Difficulty: average

70 g (3/4 cup) rolled oats
240 g (1 cup) butter
240 g (1 cup) brown sugar
1 tsp ground ginger
225 g (1 3/4 cups) all-­purpose unbleached flour
30 to 60 g (1/2 to 1 cup) crystallized ginger, finely chopped

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

Chop the rolled oats in a food processor and set aside.

Mix the butter and brown sugar together until creamy.

Add the ground ginger, rolled oats, flour, and crystallized ginger.

Pack the mixture into a large rectangular 30 x 25 cm (12 x 10 in) cake pan with your hands.

Using a knife, make incisions in the form of squares, diamonds, triangles, or rectangles on the surface of the mixture.

Bake in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes, until the top is golden.

Cut the bars along the incision marks while still hot, set aside and let cool completely before serving.

Nice looking, difficult to USE

I would have liked to give this book 5 stars, but it has serious flaws for a cook book. I have read Anti-Cancer, the book on which these recipes are based. A whole half of this book is dedicated to reiterating what foods can fight cancer. The second half is the "cookbook". The major problem with the ease of use of the cookbook is that the index is useless! Browsing through the recipes, I noticed at least 4 recipes that feature lentils. When I was ready to make some Lentil and Carrot Soup, I open the book's index to find the recipe. In the index, Lentil is not listed. Nor is Carrot. Nor Soup! Now I've got to flip through the beautiful photos and other recipes hoping to come across the one I want. That's a disappointment. The editor of this book needs a different job.

Worse than Useless

I am amazed that this book was even written by the same authors as the excellent "Foods to Fight Cancer". The first half of the book does have some very useful information but starting with the very first recipe things go downhill quickly. The first four ingredients (of a six ingredient recipe) are sugar, oil, eggs and white flour. These are foods that actually promote cancer - as anyone who has read the outstanding book "Anti-Cancer" will easily see. The wheat bran and blueberries that finish out these muffins cannot possibly compensate for the harm of the first four ingredients. What follows are more recipes full of sugar, oil, flour and animal products (such as cheese and beef) all of which are known to accelerate cancer growth. I love their other book but this one is likely to do more harm than good. For a much better book on cancer nutrition read "The Cancer Survivors Guide" by Neal Barnard and Jennifer K. Reilly or "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell PhD.

This is an outstanding book that provides information both about how cancer works and how food works to help prevent it. With this information you can prepare a diet that will certainly help you live longer whether or not you have cancer. It outlines specific foods and how they help fight cancer so you can drill right down on the most important foods you need in your diet. I have purchased numerous copies as gifts for my friends and family.

Krishnamurthy Sriramesh, PhD, is Professor of Public Relations at the School of Business, Massey University, in Wellington, New Zealand. A complete overview of transnational public relations practices

This hefty tome contains valuable information on cross-cultural public relations practices and the evolution of public relations in different cultural settings. The handbook is grouped by continent, and articles provide histories of PR in particular cultures, case studies, and practical information run through with public relations theory. It is however written from a euro-western perspective; the ideas and practices here are for white, Western and European public relations practitioners who need to operate and communicate within unfamiliar cultures. The final section focuses on the influencers, movers and shakers in global public relations. Not a lightweight read, but crammed full of useful information.

A Simple Approach to Network Marketing

After the publishing details, Don quoted Proverbs 3:27 “Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.”, King James’ Version of the Holy Bible. I find this intriguing because it speaks to the need for Network Marketers to offer the opportunity to improve their lives to other people.

And since Network Marketing takes its roots from the free enterprise system, it does make sense to talk about it to all who would be disposed to taking advantage of it. This populist orientation dictates that this business model should be presented in simple a manner.

Boiling down a matter to 45 seconds is probably stating it in the simplest possible way. That is what Don has done in each of the ten presentations on Network Marketing practice.

The core of this book starts in chapter II with an explanation of how Network Marketing works by using the concept of 2 by 2, 3 by 3 up to 5 by 5. That is, you sponsor 2 and those 2 sponsor 2 etc. I love the “Third-Party Invitation” because it melts resistance. You will find in it chapter VII. The ten presentations end in chapter XI with “The Pentagon of Growth”, which talks about how your organisation should grow.

The other chapters of the book cover sundry practical issues in Network Marketing, including objections handling.

Read this book for the nuggets of Network Marketing wisdom. You will find very useful for training those you sponsor.

Almost felt condemned

I was asked to go and check out (by a friend of mine that is involved in another MLM company outside of my own) some guy name Don Failla, and his 45 second presentation about 3 weeks ago.Well due to the factors of the "comparison Bomb"(Mark Yarnell), I didn't get around to checking it out until 2 weeks after the fact.Well, I must say I almost regret the fact that I took as long as I did to get around to engulfing my self in his knowledge...I have a really great "vehicle-company",and they teach a really solid way of approaching people about our opportunity, but I was crashing and burning all over the place .So much so, that I even quit after my first month in a half.Oh , and by the way,I have expert sales experience.That didn't help me in network marketing.... Well needless to say, I built up the nerve to start again, telling myself that I will win at this and I will not be defeated.So I've inundated myself in MLM training.Nothing has come close to the ssimplicity of Don's Approach...I told a few in my upline about the power in these methods, they aacted as if I was trying to rewrite the bible or something...lol..But Iknow my company has it's ways set for it's distributors to do things, and I don't like going against the grain, I just know through my own experiences and watching others in my short 2 months of MLM,thE Product, Marketing, or Comp plan approach is horrible and will cause so many frontline casualties.I saw myself as well as 15-20 hopefulls dissappear within a mere month or 2....It should be a crime if people aren't handed these 2 books before enrollment..It only makes sense
